The Iraqi prime minister accompanied by some Iraqi ministers and officials will embark on a visit to Iran and Turkey on December 24.
Al-Saghir from the United Iraqi Alliance said that strengthening economic relation between Iraq and Iran is the most important goal behind Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki’s travel to Iran.
Al-Saghir told the Mehr News Agency that Iraqi government welcomes travels to neighboring countries especially Iran in order to boost “brotherly relations” and cooperation.
The MP said Iran and Iraq have established good relations in different fields.
“I believe that one of the most important missions of Nuri al-Maliki in this visit is to boost economic ties with Iran,” the UIA member remarked.
Asked whether the security agreement signed between Iraq and the U.S. will be discussed during Maliki’s talks with Iranian officials, he said he has “no information” in this regard.
However, he said, “Before signing the agreement we assured neighboring countries including Iran that Iraq would not sign any treaty that would harm other countries, and during the process of signing the agreement we insisted on this subject.”
He also welcomed a possible trip to Baghdad by Iranian lawmakers, stating that frequent visits by the two countries’ officials will benefit ties.
